Making Posters

Start-Up Activity

Point to posters you have displayed in your classroom (or bring in posters for the occasion). Ask students the topic of each poster. Ask what the purpose of the poster is. Have students tell what the words do to get the main point across. Ask what the pictures do to make the poster work.

Help students see that posters use words and pictures to make strong statements and influence people. They will get to make their own posters and help convince their readers.

Think About It

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Poster-Making Tips

Lead your students through this page of tips for creating posters. Then assign them to make posters of their own.

Have students think of an important cause they want to support (adopting pets, picking up litter, helping others, and so on). Have them use the tips to create posters supporting the cause.

OR

Have students think about an upcoming event, come up with a slogan for it, and create a poster that gives the key details and catches the reader's eye.
