Writing All-About-Me Stories

Start-Up Activity

Ask your class, "What's something funny that happened to you on the playground?" Listen to students' stories. "What event totally surprised you at home?" Listen to the stories.

Tell your students that these are "All-About-Me Stories," because they tell of an interesting experience in their lives. In this chapter, students get the chance to share these kinds of stories in writing.

Think About It

“I keep stories fun for my readers by keeping them fun for me.”

—Gordon Korman

SAMPLE All-About-Me Story

Have volunteers read each paragraph of the sample story. Lead a discussion about the story:

  • Who is involved? (The writer and Aunt Gina)
  • What is happening? (The writer tries to eat spaghetti)
  • When does the story happen? (Dinnertime)
  • Where does it happen? (At an Italian restaurant)
  • Why does it happen? (Aunt Gina wants her to know the proper way to eat spaghetti)

Help students understand that an all-about-me story needs to answer the reader's basic questions about an event in the writer's life.

Writing an All-About-Me Story

Have students think of things that have happened to them—funny, surprising, exciting, and strange stories that would catch the readers' interest. Tell students to pick an experience that they would like to write about.

Afterward, have them list what happened in time order.

Write, Revise, and Edit

After students have listed what happened in order, have them write their all-about-me stories. Encourage them to start with a sentence that grabs the reader's attention.

When students complete a first draft, have them revise and edit their work. Provide the checklists to guide them.
