Start-Up Activity

Read aloud the chapter introduction for students. Then display three or four different word sets that could be combined into contractions:

  • could not
  • she is
  • they will

Ask for volunteers to guess the corresponding contractions. Demonstrate how to form each by removing letters and inserting an apostrophe.

Think About It

“The most important thing about communication is hearing what isn't said.”

—Peter Drucker

Making Contractions

Read aloud the list of common contractions. Then have students cover the first column of blue contractions with their hands. Have them read each full word (or words) and write down the contraction. (They can move their hands down to check their answers.) Repeat this activity with the second column of words.
