Start-Up Activity
Most children page through books, read the text, and enjoy the pictures without really knowing how the books came to be. Introducing students to the writing process will help them understand how these books were developed.
Explain to students that a process is a series of steps that bring about a result. Point out that bakers follow a process to bake a cake. A farmer follows a process to grow different crops. Ask students if they can think of other processes (building a model, making a bracelet, etc.). Point out that writing is a process, too. Then read and discuss page 18.

“I do a lot of my writing in my head first, just thinking through the story through.”
