Start-Up Activity

Ask for a volunteer to read aloud page 251. Then, as a class, create a historical time line of communication technology, beginning with the Pony Express in 1860 and ending with the present day. Have students work in small groups to brainstorm significant communication modes from the past. If possible, allow the groups to complete online searches for specific dates. Put together all the ideas in a single time line, and then discuss the evolution of the different forms. Finally, ask students to predict how we might communicate in the future.

Review the different ways to communicate online. Poll your students to see if they have used each form. Which forms do students use most? Which forms do they use least? What form do they use for serious messages? Afterwards, ask for volunteers to share specific experiences using the different forms.

Finding Information Online

Carefully review the online search strategies on this page. If your class has access to computers or tablets, present students with a search challenge, and encourage them to use specific keyword strategies to complete the challenge. An example challenge might be: Use a search engine to identify the names of your state senators, as well as the cities and counties they reside in.
