Using the Library Opening Page

Start-Up Activity

Have students read page 257 to learn about the evolution of libraries. Then share the “Think About It” quotation. Ask students how the quotation relates to modern libraries. As a class, brainstorm a list of ways libraries can build communities. Add to the list as you explore the information in this chapter.

Think About It

“Bad libraries build collections; good libraries build services; great libraries build communities.”

—R. David Lankes

Using Library Resources

The next two pages review the different types of learning resources libraries provide. Review how to use library catalogs, using the tips on page 158. Then discuss the role of media specialists. Consider inviting a media specialist from your school or community library to speak to your class about their role and the services provided by libraries.
