Start-Up Activity

Display the sentences below. Point out that they are short, each containing just a few words. Ask for volunteers to attempt to combine each set of sentences into longer, smoother sentences. Then read and discuss page 71.

Set 1:

  • Alex rode the horse.
  • The horse was wild.

Combined: Alex rode the wild horse.

Set 2:

  • Remember to empty the trash.
  • Remember to do the dishes.
  • Be sure to walk the dog.

Combined:  Remember to empty the trash, do the dishes, and walk the dog.

English Language Learners, even at the high-intermediate level, often repeat the same simple sentence structure in their writing. Initially, model combining similar ideas with “and.” Other connecting words should be introduced periodically.

Think About It

“Don’t worry about writing the perfect sentence or you’ll never get past the first line.”

Combining with Key Words

Display the two sentences: Josie made tacos. They were spicy. Ask for a volunteer to combine the two sentences by moving a single word from one sentence to the other sentence. Then read and discuss “Use a Key Word” on page 72.

Display the three sentences: For dessert, we had cake. We also had ice cream. We had strawberries, too. Ask for a volunteer to combine the three sentences into one sentence containing a series of words.  (A series is a group of related words or phrases, such as red, white, and blue.) Then read and discuss “Use a Series of Words or Phrases” on page 72.
