Why Write?
You have many reasons to write—to reflect on events in your life, to entertain yourself and others, to learn new material, and to demonstrate your learning on tests. In each situation, writing helps you think, and when you write down your ideas, you create a context in which others can think, too. Write on Course supports you in all of these situations. Let’s check in with a few middle school students to see how writing is helping them.
Writing to Reflect
Dani is working on a journal article about her grandma from Ireland. She is thinking about her own red hair and wondering what else is Irish about her.
Writing to Create
Rose is writing a short story set in a magical land where she and her friends are heroes. Writing unleashes her imagination!
Writing to Learn
In science class, Mateo is writing a learning log entry about a lab experiment. He is writing to learn more about his science work.
Writing to Demonstrate
Luis is responding to a prompt about the Revolutionary War. He is writing to demonstrate what he has learned.
“You learn best by reading a lot and writing a lot, and the most valuable lessons of all are the ones you teach yourself.”
—Stephen King
