Writing Book Reviews

Start-Up Activity

Ask students to raise their hands if they are interested in seeing a specific movie that will soon come out. Then show them an exciting trailer for the movie. Afterward ask again for a show of hands to indicate who is interested in seeing the movie. For those who changed their minds, ask them how the trailer affected their decisions.

Tell students they are about to create "trailers" for favorite books. Their book reviews can help convince other students to read these books.

Think About It

“I see a [movie] trailer, and if it looks good, then I go. That's that.”

—Eva Goldberg

Getting Started

Lead your students through the three basic questions that book reviews answer. Then have volunteers read the three paragraphs in the nonfiction review. After they read, pose the three questions to your students and have them answer each using evidence from the text:

  1. What is the book about?
  2. Why does the reviewer like the book?
  3. What main idea does the author share?

Writing a Book Review

Have students think about books they have recently read and enjoyed. Ask them to choose one book to use for their book review.

After they select a book, have them collect ideas from it using either the collection sheet for nonfiction or the collection sheet for fiction. (See pages 150–151.)

When students are ready to draft, lead them through the material beside "Answer the Questions." Have them look back at pages 148–149 to see the questions they must answer, and how two students organized their book reviews around the answers. Give students time to write.

When students complete their first drafts, lead them through the tips for revising and editing. Have them get the help of peer reviewers to revise their work. Then ask them to check for errors and create a clean final copy to share.
