Start-Up Activity

Information gathering is especially important for students as they begin writing essays and reports. So stress the importance of collecting details for all their writing, but especially their informational writing.

Discuss the three gathering strategies on page 26. Ask students if they have ever used any of them in the past. Then ask students how they would gather information about these topics:

  • your grandma’s favorite teacher
  • how a tornado starts
  • your favorite restaurant
  • information about your favorite author
  • your gym teacher’s best activities

Organizing Details

Discuss with students the organizing strategies on page 27 when appropriate.

  • List ideas: Refer to pages 70–71 when you discuss lists.
  • Answer the 5 W’s: Refer to the graphic on page 289. Then have students list the 5 W’s for a memorable experience.
  • Make a cluster or map: When you discuss clustering or mapping, refer students to page 288 for an example. Model the clustering process before you have students practice the technique on their own.
  • Use a collection sheet: Refer to pages 122, 150–151, and 162 for examples. Point out that collection sheets work well for reports when collecting a lot of information is important.
