Using Prefixes, Suffixes, Roots Opening Page

Start-Up Activity

This chapter includes a special dictionary of common prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Becoming aware of word parts helps students decode the meanings of words. Recommend that students refer to these pages when they are trying to figure out the meaning of a new word.

Write bicycle, tricycle, and unicycle on the board. Ask students how many wheels each one has, and what part of the word tells this. Think of other words that begin with the prefixes bi, tri, and uni.

Think About It

“I like good strong words that mean something.”

—Louisa May Alcott

Prefixes

Define prefixes for students—word parts that come before the root or base word. Explain that this page and the next show the most common prefixes.

Give time for students to examine the list of common prefixes. Then ask students to think of more words that begin with one of the prefixes from the list.

Suffixes

Define suffixes for your students—word parts that come at the end of a word. Then provide them time to review the list of common suffixes on this page and the next. As an activity, turn to one of the writing models in Write on Track and have students scan for words that include one of the suffixes from the list.

Roots

Define the meaning of root for your students—the main part, or base, of a word. Provide time for students to review the list of common roots on the next five pages. Ask for volunteers to point out a root meaning that they found interesting or surprising. Can they name any additional words that include one of the roots?
