Selecting a Topic Opening Page

Start-Up Activity

Have students close their eyes and picture in their minds a certain place (a park, a room, a bus stop, a street, a river, etc.). Then have them open their eyes and draw a picture of what they saw. Encourage them to include a lot of details in their drawing. Ask for volunteers to share their drawings. Point out how the entire drawing or parts of it provide starting points for a story or report. Next, read and discuss the chapter introduction. Encourage or assign your students to keep an ideas notebook.

Think About It

“I get my ideas from things that have happened to me, things that I find interesting, things that happen to other people.”

—Christopher Paul Curtis

Look, Listen, and Learn

The next two pages show students different ways to generate writing ideas. Remind students that drawing pictures is another way to look for topics. As an extended activity, you could have students create a life map (with help from home). You could also have students begin lists of their bests, worsts, and favorites in their notebooks.
