Start-Up Activity

Share with students this quote and lead a discussion about it:

  • “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

When you fail to plan, you end up doing only the best you can do in the moment, with whatever you have. When you create a plan, you can do the best you can do in many moments, with all the resources you need. After you and your students have considered this quotation, tell them to replace it in their minds with the "Think About It" quotation.

Think About It

“Plan your work, and work your plan."

How to Plan Ahead

Lead students through the planning tips on this page. Ask students which of these tips they already do. Have specific students volunteer their strategies for listing assignments, keeping supplies together, working little by little at big assignments, and so on. Ask each student to write down two of the tips that he or she wants to focus on to improve planning in the future.

Revisit these tips in a week and ask students how well they are enacting their "planning plans." Encourage continued improvement.

Daily and Weekly Assignment Chart

Show students that they can plan their work daily and weekly.

The daily assignment chart provides the date, lists each subject, and includes any homework.

The weekly assignment chart lists the days and the steps to complete in a larger project.

For advanced students with even bigger projects, you can share with them the related minilesson, which includes a planning sheet that middle schoolers use.
