Start-Up Activity

Display three columns labeled with "Tallest," "Longest," and "Fastest." Ask your students the following questions, and write their guesses in the columns:

  • What is the tallest mountain? (Mount Everest)
  • What was the longest dinosaur? (Seismosaurus)
  • What is the fastest fish? (Sailfish)

Then have your students do online searches to discover which answers were right. Tell them that this chapter will help them use the Internet to communicate and find information.

Using Email

Introduce the page by telling students that email is an important mode of communication in school and in the workplace. Review the sample email message and its specific parts. Let students know that all email programs have these common parts.

If your students have a school email address, have them practice sending you a message about a topic of your choice. You could even ask them to attach a digital file of saved schoolwork.

Viewing Web Pages

Ask students to share some of their favorite Web pages. Discuss their answers. Then have a volunteer read aloud "Parts of a Web Page." Point out the different parts of the sample Web page.

Next, display a new Web page and identify the parts for your students. Finally, display a different Web page and have students identify the parts.

Using Communication Tools (New Edition)

Ask students to raise their hands if they have ever used these online communication tools: video chat, text chat, blog/wiki post. Have students describe their experiences using each of these tools. Then read the description of each tool.

Afterward, review the communication tips at the bottom of the page. These focus on the main parts of the communication situation: audience, medium, and tone. Help students realize that whenever they write online, another person will be reading their ideas.

Using Keyword Searches

Review the tips for using keyword searches. Make a special note of item number 4. Make sure students know the difference between general search terms and more specific ones. Ask students to come up with more specific key words or phrases for the following categories:

  • Cars (fast cars, popular cars in Europe, parts of a car engine)
  • Horses (types of wild horses, how to train a horse, showing a horse)
  • Africa (animals of Africa, African safaris, famous Africans)

Then give students a chance to practice the search tips using the KidRex search engine. Ask them to share what they learned from the experience and share a favorite search result.

Staying Safe Online

Lead your students through the tips for staying safe online. Ask for volunteers to share examples of house rules their parents set for using the Internet. If you haven't done so already, post a set of classroom rules for using the Internet. Allow students to make suggestions for additions to the rules.
