Publishing Your Writing Opening Page

Start-Up Activity

Publishing helps young writers get interested in their work and creates a sense of pride and accomplishment. It underscores the importance of all the effort involved in the writing process. And it nurtures an awareness of authorship and audience.

Display this statement: “If you know your writing will be published, you will do your best work.” Ask students why the prospect of publishing has this effect. (Possible responses: Writers like to hear positive things about their work. Writing is an extension of the writer.) Then read and discuss the chapter introduction. Ask students to share memorable publishing experiences.

Think About It

“Writing becomes real when it has an audience.”

Making a Classroom Portfolio

This page describes two types of classroom portfolios—showcase and growth portfolios. In a showcase portfolio, students “showcase” their best work for the term. In a growth portfolio, they show how they are growing as writers. During your discussion of this page, share examples of classroom portfolios if possible. Inform students that compiling either type of portfolio will help them see how they have developed as writers throughout the year.

Portfolio Planning Tips

Carefully review this page with students before they begin planning a classroom portfolio. Stress the importance of knowing what to include and of completing all assignments on time. Remind students that their portfolio will only be as good as the effort that they put into it.
