Becoming a Better Speller Opening Page

Start-Up Activity

Have students turn to page 250 in their handbooks and read the first paragraph together. Then have them brainstorm words that contain the base word night (goodnight, tonight, nightingale, nightstick, nightly, nightie). Talk about the fact that knowing the spelling of the word night makes it easier to spell all the other words.

Assure students that this chapter includes many strategies to help them improve their spelling.

Think About It

“Spelling is the clothing of words, their outward visible sign. . . . ”

—Mary Norris

1. Use strategies to help you spell.

Ask for volunteers to read aloud the strategies for learning spelling words. Display the following list of grade 3 vocabulary words:

  • sprinkle
  • freeze
  • capable

Pronounce each word slowly and clearly. Give students time to use the strategies on this page to practice spelling each word. Repeat the activity as necessary with other words.

2. Make a spelling dictionary / 3. Proofread for spelling.

Help students set up a spelling dictionary in their notebooks or journals. For their first entries, have them scan a model from Write on Track, choose a difficult word to spell, and write it in their spelling notebook. For an extra challenge, have them also spell word relatives. (For example, a word relative of Britain is British.)

Also remind students to proofread their writing for spelling after they have done the necessary prewriting, drafting, and revising.
