Checking Your Spelling

Start-Up Activity

Share with your students some occasions when auto-correct or spell-check failed you. Here are some examples:

  • "Your concert was beautiful" becomes "Your concert was vehicular."
  • "How is your mother doing?" becomes "How is your mothball doing?"
  • "I can't wait to try on my new uniform" becomes "I  can't wait to try on my new unicorn."
  • "Your aunt had a baby girl" becomes "Your aunt had a baby gorilla."

Ask your students if they have any similar stories. Let them know that these computer tools can't take care of all spelling issues.

Then lead students through the tips on this page. Point out to students that the high-frequency word list starting on this page can serve as a spelling guide to the words they often use.

Think About It

—A. A. Milne
