Making Bookmarks

Start-Up Activity

Bring to the class an assortment of bookmarks with inspirational sayings on them. Pass them around and have students decide which of the bookmarks is their favorite. Ask them to share why they like one most of all.

Tell them that they can make their own bookmarks with inspirational sayings—sayings about some of their favorite books. If they make their bookmarks well, they will inspire other students to read the books they love.

Discuss with your students the front of the bookmark on this page. Use the side notes to draw attention to the features of this bookmark. Ask these questions:

  • How does the writer identify the book?
  • How does the illustration catch your attention?
  • How do the words at the bottom hook your interest?

Back of the Bookmark

Have a volunteer read the back of the bookmark. Then lead a discussion:

  • How does the writer introduce the main character and the problem she faces?
  • How does the writer touch on the main theme of the book?
  • How does the writer encourage others to read the book?
  • What symbols does the writer use to attract readers?

Design Guidelines

Help students (1) select a book they have recently read (fiction or nonfiction).

Then lead them through the (2) parts of their bookmarks, using the model on pages 155–156 as a guide. Ask them to write and sketch these parts on regular notebook paper so that they can revise and edit them before transferring them to the final bookmark.

After students have revised and edited all of the parts of their bookmarks, have them transfer all of the parts to create a (3) clean final copy on their bookmarks. Then encourage students to share their bookmarks with their classmates.
