Writing Lists

Have you ever helped make a shopping list? Bread, apples, carrots, potatoes, bananas . . . alfalfa? Imagine being a zookeeper making a list of foods for your animals. How many loaves of bread would you get? How many pounds of alfalfa?

Making Lists

Lists help you get everything you need, gather ideas for writing, think in different ways, and just have fun. Once you start listing, you won’t want to stop!

1. Remembering Things

Lists help you remember things. Imagine that your class were designing bridges. What would you build with? Take a look at the list of supplies below. What else would you want?

2. Collecting Ideas for Writing

Imagine that your class is studying bizarre winter weather. We’re getting a lot of it these days! You make a list of all kinds of exciting words. Which are familiar? Which are new? Can you define the words on the winter list above?

A list of winter words helps you learn about strange weather. Knowing those words helps you write reports and stories. What ideas do you get from this list?

3. Thinking in Different Ways

Lists can help you open your mind to new thoughts. There is a book for adults called 14,000 Things to Be Happy About. The writer of this book thought about being happy in many different ways. Here are some of the things listed in the book:

• making a balloon dog

• fake fur coats

• being a night person

• urban legends

• combining different cereals

Try It Out

You can make your own list of 100 things that make you happy. After you make a list by yourself, try making one with a friend or two. Who knows? Maybe your whole class could list 1,000 things that make you happy!

Your Shopping List 🟪 Make your own shopping list. List 10, 20, 30, or however many items you need. Shop for yourself, your little brother, your favorite animal, or anyone else. Shop for yummy foods, yucky foods, or foods no one has heard of before. (Have fun!)
