Using the Internet Opening Page

Start-Up Activity

Ask students to choose an interesting writing topic to research. (For help, refer them to this list of writing topics.) Then have them find and rank at least three Web pages that deal with the topic. The rankings should designate each site as good, bad, or ugly. Finally, have students write a summary of why they ranked the pages in the way they did.

Explain that this chapter will help them find and evaluate online sources of information.

Think About It

“Technology gives us power, but it does not and cannot tell us how to use that power. Thanks to technology, we can instantly communicate across the world, but it still doesn't help us know what to say.”

—Jonathan Sacks

Researching on the Internet

Lead students through the tips for using online search sites for research. Ask for volunteers to share their preferred search sites. Have them explain what they like best about the site and why they prefer it over other search sites.

Word-Searching Guide

Review how different combinations of words and symbols can impact search results. If your class has access to computers or tablets, present students with a search challenge, and encourage them to use specific keyword strategies to complete the challenge. Try this challenge: Use a search engine to identify the names of your state senators, as well as the cities and counties they reside in and the colleges they attended.

Evaluating Online Information

Express to students that although the Web provides access to a trove of information, not all of the content is reliable. Then lead students through the ways to evaluate online information, particularly for balance and timeliness. Have them practice evaluating sample Web pages using the online evaluation checklist.

Also review the tips for saving information. Point out that saving sources becomes particularly important for organizing information during research projects.

Quick Guide: Internet

Ask for volunteers to read aloud the quick guide tips to using the Internet. Pay special attention to the section on using netiquette. As a class, brainstorm some additional ways to display netiquette when interacting with others online.
