Conducting Library Research Opening Page

Start-Up Activity

Have students read page 365 to learn about the role of libraries in research. Then share the “Think About It” quotation. Ask students how the quotation relates to modern libraries.

As a class, brainstorm a list of ways libraries can build communities. Add to the list as you explore the information in this chapter.

Think About It

“Bad libraries build collections; good libraries build services; great libraries build communities.”

—R. David Lankes

Searching for Information

Review the tips for using a library's computer catalog. Note that you can access materials in a similar manner using a library's online catalog, which is usually available at the library's Web site. (Your school's library may not have a digital catalog, but almost all public libraries do.)

If possible, have students practice looking up assigned titles, authors, and subjects in a school or public library. Note that library staff members called media specialists can help students access the catalog as well as other library resources.

Getting Help from Media Specialists and Using Digital Resources

Review the different types of digital resources available at many libraries. Highlight the important role of media specialists, library staff members who can help students learn about the resources available.

If possible, arrange a class trip to your school or public library. Ask for a media specialist to give a tour and explain how to access the library's various resources and services.
