Becoming a Good Listener

Review the strategies for close listening. Ask for volunteers to share other listening strategies they’ve used before. Then have students practice two or three of the strategies as you read them a student model: 

  • Listen carefully as I read this essay.
  • In the first reading, listen for concrete nouns. List at least five different examples.
  • In the second reading, listen for action verbs. List at least five different examples.

Then read aloud  Mir Pushed the Frontier of Space” while students write down concrete nouns. Read a second time so that they can note action verbs.
