Checking Your Spelling
- Check your spelling by using a dictionary or a list of commonly misspelled words (like the one that follows).
- Check a dictionary for the correct pronunciation of each word you are trying to spell. Knowing how to pronounce a word will help you remember how to spell it.
- Look up the meaning of each word. Knowing how to spell a word is of little use if you don’t know what it means.
- Practice seeing the word in your mind’s eye. Look away from the dictionary page and write the word on a piece of paper. Check the spelling in the dictionary. Repeat this process until you can spell the word correctly.
- Make a spelling dictionary. Keep a notebook or computer file with the correct spellings of words you tend to misspell. (See page 360.)
- Practice. Learning to become a good speller takes time.
