Some words have subtle differences in meaning. Pay attention to the following:

  • affect, effect: Affect is a verb meaning "to influence." Effect is most often a noun that means "the result."

    Tasha's free kick affected the outcome of the soccer match.

    What effects did the spinning ball have on the goalkeeper?

  • chose, choose: Chose is the past tense of the verb choose.

    The goalkeeper chose to dive right.

    Would you choose to dive in the same direction?
