Using Specific Nouns

artist

Nouns name the people, places, things, and ideas in writing. General nouns don't create a very clear picture:

An artist painted flowers that were floating in water in a faraway place.

Specific nouns bring ideas into sharp focus:

Claude Monet painted water lilies floating in his pond in France.

This chart progresses from general nouns to specific nouns.
