Using Quotation Marks

Use quotation marks around the exact words of a speaker.
Clive asked, "What is your report about, Clare?"
Introduce a quotation with a word like "said" or "asked" followed by a comma.
Clare replied, "My report is about cardinals and why they don't migrate."
(Capitalize the first word in a quotation.)
Also use quotation marks around the title of a short work—story, song, poem, chapter, episode.
Clare titled her report "Cardinals in the Neighborhood."
