To show strong emotion, use an exclamation point instead of a period.

Dave didn't expect that result.

Dave didn't expect that result!

       (The period makes the first sentence calm. The exclamation point makes the second sentence exciting or alarming.)

To emphasize an idea, use a dash (—) instead of a comma.
