Using Passive Voice

Active sentences are generally clearer and more direct than passive sentences. But using the passive voice is not always a bad thing. Sometimes the part of a sentence receiving an action is more important than who or what is doing it. In such cases, the passive voice works best.

New bleachers were installed in the gym.

       (In this passive sentence, what were installed—new bleachers—are more important than who installed them.)
