Many verbs form the past tense by adding ed:

Right now, we listen to a lecture. This morning, we listened to a lecture. We have listened to a lecture each hour today.

An irregular verb creates the past tense and past participle by changing forms:

I write what the teacher says. Yesterday I wrote five pages of notes. I have written twenty pages this week!
