Many verbs form the past tense by adding ed.

We often grill burgers. Yesterday, Al grilled a huge burger!

An irregular verb changes form to show past tense.

We often eat burgers. Yesterday, Al ate the biggest burger I've ever seen!

The verb eat doesn't become eated but ate. Here are more irregular verbs:

begin, began

bite, bit

blow, blew

break, broke
