An adverb describes a verb or tells how an action is done. Adverbs usually tell when, where, or how.
The airship sailed smoothly.
(The adverb smoothly describes how the airship sailed.)
Stars floated nearby.
(The adverb nearby describes where the stars floated.)
Jennie soon caught one.
(The adverb soon describes when Jennie caught a star.)
