Understanding Denotation and Connotation

on the streets

The denotation of a word is its dictionary definition. The following words have the same basic denotation: to walk with heavy steps.

marched     strode     trudged     slogged

However, each of these words has different connotations, the web of ideas and feelings that they evoke.

marched (military, precise, in a group, purposeful)

strode (confident, energetic, bold, brave)
