A simple sentence has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.
Mr. Wilkes has a loud voice.

When two simple sentences are closely related, you can join them using a comma and a coordinating conjunction—and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet.
Mr. Wilkes has a loud voice, but he still uses a loudspeaker.
