  • subordinating conjunction: word or phrase that joins two clauses, making one less important (subordinating it)— after, although, as, as if, as long as, as though, because, before, if, in order that, since, so that, though, unless, until, when, where, while

  • subordinate clause: group of words beginning with a subordinating conjunction and including a subject and verb, but not expressing a complete thought; also called an adverb clause or a dependent clause
